Why is my alarm beeping after a power outage?

Monsoon outage and now the alarm panel will not stop beeping? Here are the usual causes, how to quiet it, and when it needs a service call.

Monsoon season knocks the power out across the Valley, and the next morning a lot of alarm panels start beeping. In most cases nothing is wrong with the alarm itself. The panel is telling you something needs attention.

This is general information. Every panel is a little different, so check your panel’s manual or ask your alarm company.

The usual causes

1. The backup battery is low. When the power goes out, the panel runs on its backup battery. A long outage can drain it, and an old battery may never fully recharge. The panel beeps until the battery is charged or replaced. Backup batteries typically last a few years.

2. The panel lost AC power and is still showing it. Some panels keep a “trouble” message on the screen after power comes back until you acknowledge it.

3. It lost its connection. If your alarm reports through your internet and the router did not come back on, the panel may show a communication trouble. Restart the modem and router and give it a few minutes.

4. A wireless sensor has a low battery. Sometimes the outage is a coincidence and a door or motion sensor battery is simply getting low.

How to quiet it

  • Look at the panel screen or app for a trouble message. It usually tells you which problem it is.
  • Most panels let you acknowledge a trouble beep from the keypad. Your manual or alarm company can tell you the exact steps.
  • Give the backup battery a day to recharge if the outage was long.

When to call for help

  • The beeping comes back every day.
  • The panel shows a low battery even after a full day with power.
  • The panel is old and the trouble message will not clear.
  • You are not sure the alarm is still reaching the monitoring company.

A worn-out backup battery is a quick fix, and it matters: without it, the alarm goes dark the next time the power goes out.
